Amazon Arrow's Power Quest | Epilogue - Amazon Arrow's Secret Identity

I look ridiculous. This is a complete waste of time Spellbound!

Chryseis, you look perfect! I wish there was some other solution, but your headaches are only going to get worse if you continue to suppress your alter ego. You have to let “Ms. Kent” take over from time time.

Secret identities are a pain in the butt. If I had my choice I’d be out there on the streets looking for bad guys! What if something terrible happens while I’m stuck here flipping through the card catalog?!?!

Ms. Kent is the Head Librarian of the Acquisitions Department, so she can come and go as she pleases and she’s only required to spend 20 hours per week on campus. That’s more than enough time to restore your mental balance and alleviate your headaches. And you aren’t the only superhero you know. I’m sure the rest of us can handle things for 20 hours per week. In fact, that’s 20 hours that I won’t have to worry about needing to come rescue you from some horrible death trap.

Ha, ha… You won’t be cracking jokes the next time you’re the one stuck in a trap and you realize that I’m not coming because I’m too busy shelving books and cleaning up after college students. Ugghhh… I think I’d rather be in the death trap myself.

You aren’t going to remember anything that happens to you while you’re Chrys Kent. Just think of it as a nice afternoon nap, and when you wake up you’ll be ready for battle and your headaches will be gone.

Alright, let’s just get this over with… what do I need to do?

I’ve already cast the area enchantments and defined the perimeter. Ms. Kent is in control while you are in the library, as well as anywhere in the entire neighboring college campus… and the rest of the world belongs to the Amazon Arrow. All you have to do is step over this sidewalk and you’ll instantly be happy-go-lucky Ms. Kent strolling her way into work. You’ll forget this entire conversation and everything else that you do as the Amazon Arrow.

Ms. Kent sounds like a moron. What does she think she does when she’s not here?

The mind is very elastic and creative. When I spoke with Ms. Kent previously she didn’t seem too concerned about such things, and she was very good about deflecting inquiries into her personal life. I’m sure she’ll be fine. Also she’s not a moron… In fact she’s highly intelligent and really very sweet and personable. She and I get along quite well.

So… all I have to do is step over the sidewalk? No spinning transformations or magic words?

Nope. Sorry. It’s all fairly unimpressive and mundane. I considered a magic word tied to a summoning spell for your costume and weaponry, but…

You mean like…”SHAZAM!”

Yes… but, uhm… it wasn’t going to be SHAZAM…

Rats. That would have been cool!

But, as I was saying… Ms. Kent doesn’t know that she’s the Amazon Arrow and she has no knowledge of the existence of magic, so she would have no reason to ever say a magic word. The trigger has to be something that we know for certain that she will say or do… and we know for certain that at some point she will leave the library and go home. When that happens, you’ll be back in control the moment she steps off of the campus. Honestly, Chryseis, we’ve already been over all of this and you’re just stalling.

Alright, alright…This is such a mess, Spellbound.

This close to the campus you should probably call me Tabitha. Remember I still have my part-time job here as your Assistant Librarian and we don’t want to blow my cover… or yours. I won’t be here every day, but I’ll stop in to check on Ms. Kent from time to time to make sure that you’re safe and doing OK.

Oh, I’m not worried… It’s just a library... What could possibly go wrong in a place like this?

Spellbound (aka Tabitha Jones) is the OC of :iconsinistermarauder:

Amazon Arrow's Power Quest | Part 8 - Amazon Arrow Reborn

This story occurs eight weeks after Amazon Arrow's Downfall.

She’s been like this for almost two months, Dr. Quest?

Yes, Ms. Spellbound… actually this is one of Chryseis’s “bad spells”. Normally she is quite docile and believes that she is some sort of librarian. Most of the time she is very confused as to why she is being held here in restraints and insists that she must get back to her new job… but then without warning… her “other” personality takes over and she can become extremely aggressive. She believes that she is a Goddess and will physically attack anyone that approaches her.

What about Chryseis’s “real” personality? How often does she realize that she is actually the Amazon Arrow?

Unfortunately… never. In the last eight weeks there has been NO recognizable trace of her true persona. We don’t even know if it still exists. We are no strangers to “exotic” afflictions here at the Costal City Hospital, but Chryseis has not responded to ANY of our advanced therapies or medications. The Amazons sent medical specialists as well, but even they were unable to improve her mental stability. Her psyche has been mystically fragmented. We believe that your sorcery may be the only thing that can help her, but… I am deeply concerned that you are not yet ready for this procedure Ms. Spellbound. You have only just begun to recover from injuries that Chryseis herself inflicted upon you. You were comatose for weeks and, as your doctor, I do not advise…

I’m fine, Doctor. My concern is for my friend. If what you say is true, if there has been no outward manifestation of Chryseis’s authentic personality…I might already be too late. I intend to cast an enchantment that will allow me to interact with Chryseis’s mind on a psychophysical level. I need to find out if Chryseis is in there at all, and if there is anything that I can do to pull her out again. I must act now.

And will the Red Empress be joining you in this endeavor?

Actually… the Red Empress is here for YOUR protection.

How do you mean?

There is a possibility that the Goddess persona might have retained some of its vast power and may attempt to assault me psionically. The Goddess cannot be allowed access to my sorcery. In the event that I show any signs of being overcome… the Red Empress is here to snap my neck.

Oh… I see…

After I complete the preparations for the spell I will need this entire wing of the hospital ward evacuated. I will need you to anesthetize both Chryseis and myself, and then I would ask that you evacuate as well, Dr. Quest.

Ms. Spellbound… you and Chryseis are my patients. I will assist you in whatever preparations you may require, but I can assure you that I will not be leaving your side.

Thank you, Doctor. I suspected as much. There is no time to waste. Let’s begin immediately…
Red Empress and Spellbound are the OC's of :iconsinistermarauder:

The spell worked! I’m inside the Amazon Arrow’s mind… but… I appear to be in some sort of library… an exact psychic replica of the Racks View Memorial Library if I’m not mistaken. This is where Chryseis worked briefly before the manifestation of her “Goddess” persona. This library was her safe haven… a last desperate attempt to cling to her humanity before she was consumed by the overwhelming hunger from her Power Quest. The detail of this construct is astonishing... I’ve never seen a dreamscape with so much accuracy. Her imagination is quite impressive!

Oh, dear… uhm… Miss! ...Miss! ... I’m sorry but… I’m afraid I’ll have to ask you to leave!

Chryseis?

We have a dress code here and your attire is entirely inappropriate… and my name is Chrys… Chrys Kent… I am the Head Librarian here at...

Chryseis… it’s me… Spellbound… don’t… don’t you recognize me?

I’m sorry, but no… Have we met? I don’t think that we have… I’m fairly certain that I would remember someone with your, uhm… fashion sensibilities?

Hmmm... Tabitha Jones... Is that name familiar?

Of course! She’s my new Librarian Assistant... I’m sure she’s around here somewhere. Hopefully she hasn't entered The Vault.

How long have you been here, Ms. Kent?

Just a few months…

And before that… Where are you from? Where were you born? What did you do before arriving here at the library?

So many questions, young lady… but I really must ask you to leave. No more stalling! I’d hate to have to call for security.

I’ll be leaving in just a moment, Ms. Kent...  but tell me… have you heard of the Amazon Arrow?

No… but if you’d like to go home and change into more appropriate clothing I can look that up for you and have your resources ready and waiting for you when you get back.

One last question, Ms. Kent. The Vault that you mentioned... what's inside?

Oh, I'm sorry, but that area of the library is completely off limits to the public. Now off you go… scoot!

YOU WOULD COME HERE… IN MY VERY OWN MIND… AND SEEK TO PIT YOUR MYSTICAL MIGHT AGAINST MY OWN?!?! YOU ARE A BIGGER FOOL THAN I THOUGHT SPELLBOUND!

Ms. Kent!! Stay behind me!!

I WILL DEVOUR BOTH YOU AND THE LIBRARIAN!!! YOU PATHETIC LITTLE WITCH!!! YOUR MAGICS ARE LITTLE MORE THAN PARLOR TRICKS COMPARED TO THE POWER OF A GODDESS!!!

Hmmm… If that’s true, “Goddess”… If you have the power to destroy Ms. Kent... then why have you not done so already?

YOU DARE QUESTION ME?!?!

It’s been eight weeks! Surely it doesn’t take eight weeks for a Goddess to strike down a librarian. I don’t think you are capable of killing her… because you are connected! Isn’t that right, Chryseis?

I AM NOT CHRYSEIS! CHRYSEIS IS BUT A FRACTION OF MY AWESOME BEING! I AM A FUSION OF SOULS! EVERY LAST ONE OF THE HEROES, HEROINES, VILLAINS AND VILLAINESSES THAT CHRYSEIS STRUCK DOWN WITH HER SOUL ARROWS CAN BE FOUND WITHIN ME. THEY ARE ME… AND I AM THEY!

No, I don’t believe that is truly the case... You overstate your significance.

OH? THEN TELL ME… WHAT IS YOUR INSIGHT, LITTLE WITCH?

You are both “remnants” of Chryseis's Power Quest. Chryseis may be within you both… but neither of you are her. I think you, Goddess, are the accumulation of negative emotions from the Soul Arrow’s victims… while Ms. Kent represents the positive emotions. You are the thirst for vengeance, the lust for power, the anger, the greed… while Ms. Kent is the courageous, the honest, the loving and the gentle. We are in her library… her environment… Despite all of your bluster, clearly Ms. Kent is the dominant personality.

PERHAPS I HAVE UNDERESTIMATED YOU SPELLBOUND! YOU ARE QUITE CLEVER! I SHALL ENJOY ABSORBING YOUR MYSTICAL POWER AND ADDING YOUR MIGHT TO MY OWN. TOGETHER WE SHALL ACCOMPLISH SUCH TERRIBLE AND GLORIOUS THINGS!

I do not fear you, Goddess…

YOU NEED NOT FEAR ME LITTLE WITCH… YOU ARE TEMPTED… AND THAT IS ENOUGH! I CAN FEEL IT SPELLBOUND! THERE IS A PART OF YOU THAT WANTS THIS! YOU HAVE ACCESS TO A DARK FORCE THAT YOU DENY YOURSELF! YOU LIMIT YOURSELF AS A SORCERESS BECAUSE YOU FEAR THE CONSEQUENCES TO OTHERS IF YOU EMBRACE THE FULL EXTENT OF YOUR MAGICAL POWERS. JOIN ME AND THERE WILL BE NO FEAR. THE BLAME WILL BE MINE… THE WORLD WILL LOOK UPON YOU AS A HELPLESS VICTIM… JUST AS THEY NOW DO WITH CHRYSEIS! THEY WILL NOT HOLD YOU RESPONSIBLE FOR YOUR ACTIONS WHEN ALL IS SAID AND DONE... BUT IN THE MEANTIME… YOU WILL KNOW THE UNBOUND MAJESTY OF YOUR SORCERY! IMAGINE THE GOOD YOU AND I MIGHT ACCOMPLISH TOGETHER! I HAVE SEEN THE FUTURE AND THIS IS FOR THE BEST! LET ME SHOW YOU! THIS IS WHAT MUST HAPPEN! JOIN ME!

I… I am… tempted… I will not deny it... Is this the offer that you made to Chryseis? Is this how you corrupted her soul?

CHRYSEIS’S SECRETS ARE NOT MINE TO TELL! ASK HER YOURSELF!

Where is she? How do I find her? Ms. Kent mentioned a forbidden “Vault”. Is that were you have Chryseis locked away?

HAHAHAHA!!!  IGNORANT WITCH! …CHRYSEIS IS NOT IN THE VAULT… SHE IS GUARDING IT!

Oh dear, we really shouldn’t be down here... The basement of the Library isn’t finished yet.

OH SHUT UP YOU STUPID BIMBO! THIS ISN’T A LIBRARY AT ALL! IT’S A PSYCHIC CONSTRUCT… NOTHING MORE THAN A SYMBOLIC MANIFESTATION OF MY MIND!

Actually, Ms. Spellbound said this was my environment… and it’s not necessary for you to be so rude.

SHE SAID THE MAIN LIBRARY WAS YOUR ENVIRONMENT… BUT DOWN HERE NEITHER OF US ARE IN CONTROL!

Well, then… who is?

WE ARE NEARING THE VAULT …WHO DO YOU THINK?!?!?

The Vault? Oh, no… The Vault is forbidden... We mustn’t go near it! Chryseis will be terribly upset… Let’s… let’s all go back upstairs for some refreshments instead. Doesn’t that sound nice, Ms. Spellbound?

I’m afraid we must keep going, Ms. Kent… The secrets that Chryseis has locked away down here are obviously causing her a great deal of internal conflict. We must uncover those secrets if we are to begin the healing of her fractured mind.

Well… I think whatever is down here is absolutely none of your business, Ms. Spellbound. I think it would be best if you exited the Library.

FOR THE LAST TIME… THIS IS NOT A LIBRARY!!!

Shhh… lower your voice. People upstairs are trying to study.

Ladies, please... we’re approaching the bottom of the stairwell… there appears to be some sort of tunnel ahead. We must proceed with caution…

Oh, no… is that Chryseis? It can’t be…

I warned you she would be angry, Ms. Spellbound. She’s growling at us! I really think it might be best if we returned to the library. Let’s be on our way…

SHE ISN’T “ANGRY” YOU TWIT!  SHE’S FERAL! SPELLBOUND WANTED TO FIND CHRYSEIS… WELL… HERE SHE IS! YOUR PRECIOUS CHRYSEIS IS NOTHING MORE THAN A SLOBBERING BEAST! HAHAHAH!

Feral? …Of course… Strip away the “good” and the “evil” and all that remains is “instinct”. This is Chryseis’s most primitive aspect.

GOOD AND EVIL ARE ALL RELATIVE, YOU ARROGANT WITCH! THIS SAVAGE CREATURE IS THE “ID”. SHE REPRESENTS BASIC INSTINCTS, REFLEXES AND IMPULSES. THIS ANIMAL DOES WHAT PLEASES HER. …I AM THE “EGO”. I REPRESENT INTELLECT, COGNITION AND PERCEPTION OF REALITY. I DO WHAT LOGIC DICTATES MUST BE DONE... AND THIS STUPID LIBRARIAN IS THE “SUPER-EGO”. SHE IS GUILT AND THE SENSE OF RIGHT AND WRONG, SOCIAL CONSCIENCE AND RESPONSIBILITY.

You’re talking about Freudian psychological models… Chryseis must have read about it at some point and it’s influencing this psychic construct. This interpretation may not be entirely accurate in all Freudian respects, but I’m beginning to understand the nature of the problem. Chryseis is instinctively guarding the contents of that Vault. She thinks that whatever it contains is so important that she is willing to discard the rest of her personality to ensure that it remains protected. She has literally torn herself apart over it!

THEN HONOR HER WISH AND TURN BACK NOW, YOU MEDDLESOME WITCH! WHO ARE YOU TO QUESTION HER SACRIFICE?!??! GUARDING THE CONTENTS OF THAT VAULT IS PARAMOUNT TO HER! TERMINATE THIS ENCHANTMENT, RETURN TO YOUR OWN DIMENSION... AND GET OUT OF OUR HEAD!!!

But… I can’t just leave her like this… The three of you can’t exist independently. You need to…

Ms. Spellbound… Look out!

Chryseis! No! ...I'm only trying to help! ...I... GGLLLK!!

HAHAHAHA!!! DIE SPELLBOUND!!!

No! How can you say that?!?! This isn't right! Stop this at once!

OH SHUT UP, MS. GOODIE-TWO-SHOES!!! WE'RE GOING TO KILL A SORCERESS!! SIT BACK AND ENJOY THE SHOW! HAHAHAHAHA!!!!

Stop this! She’s already unconscious! Leave her alone!

SPELLBOUND BROUGHT THIS ON HERSELF. I WARNED HER… AND SO DID YOU.

We’re tearing her apart! …We… we’re killing her... Why is this happening?!?!?

SPELLBOUND’S PRESENCE HERE IS A VIOLATION. SHE IS A FOREIGN INVADER… A MENTAL RAPIST! THE NOSY WITCH DESERVES HER FATE. ONCE WE SHRED HER MYSTICAL DEFENSES WE CAN ASSIMILATE HER PERSONALITY AND HER POWERS AND WE’LL BE STRONGER THAN EVER! SPELLBOUND IS ABOUT TO BECOME A TASTY SNACK… METAPHYSICALLY SPEAKING… HAHAHAHA!!!

We are not killers! Chryseis did all of this to deal with what’s in the Vault. We’re trying to save lives, not end them! Our little “arrangement” was never supposed to put anyone else in danger, let alone result in the death of a friend! This isn’t supposed to happen!

THAT’S YOUR OPINION. CHRYSEIS’S PRIMAL NATURE WILL NOT HESITATE TO KILL… AND I SIMPLY DON’T CARE. YOU’RE OUT VOTED MY DEAR... SPELLBOUND IS FINISHED!

WHAT… WHAT ARE YOU DOING?!?!? …LET ME GO!!!

No secret is worth Spellbound’s life! We have to save her! I’m sorry, but… I can’t let us… you… me… we aren’t going to kill her! This has to end!

STUPID LIBRARIAN! RELEASE ME AT ONCE! YOU HAVE NO IDEA WHAT YOU’RE DOING?!?!?

Oh yes I do… If Primal Chryseis can assimilate Spellbound… then I can assimilate you!

STOP THIS!!!! AAAGGHHHH!!!!! WE’LL BE DESTROYED!!!! YOU’RE … YOU’RE TEARING US APART!!!!!

No… I’m putting us back together…

Get... AWAY... from... HER... you... BITCH!!!

OOooohhh, my head... How long... have I been out cold? ...Chryseis?

Chryseis? ... Amazon Arrow? ... Is that you? ... Are you... ok?

It's me, Tabitha... the real me... I'm finally back! ...But, uhm... apparently "Ms. Kent" is still here also?

Wow! She’s really out of it. Is she going to be ok?

Relax, Chryseis… Ms. Kent is only sleeping, or perhaps “dormant” might be a better term. It appears your psyche has reached a new equilibrium state. The conjunction of the fragmented personas accumulated during your power quest has resulted in an unprecedented dual dissociative identity condition.

Uhhh… So is that a “yes” or a “no”? All I heard was “blahblahblah”… I have no idea what you’re talking about!

It means you have a sleeping librarian stuck in your brain.

Oh… well… that doesn’t sound good. What happens when she wakes up?

Most likely you will become dormant and Ms. Kent will be the one in control of your mental and physical faculties. When she wakes up, you will sleep, and vice versa. Basically, you have become two people sharing one body.

Yeah, uhm, that’s not going to work for me... How do we get rid of her?

I’m afraid it’s not that simple. During the Power Quest you accumulated psychic bits and pieces from the people that you stabbed with your Soul Arrows. Your brain has been struggling to find a place for all of this “extra” psychic information by combining these remnants into an organized collective. Moments ago you had three distinct personas competing for dominance… now you have only two personas with only one active at a time. This current situation might seem inconvenient, but trust me when I say this is a far more stable and productive configuration than your previous one.

Inconvenient?!?!? … This is MY body!!! Can’t we just keep Ms. Kent asleep? Or maybe download her somehow? Can’t you do some kind of magical, witchy, sorcery thing to fix this?

Well, this doesn’t exactly happen every day. I don’t know any “magical, witchy, sorcery” spells to alleviate this particular condition off of the top of my head. This is going to require some research… and even then, I can’t make any promises. I might be able to regulate your identity state so that you don’t lose control at an inappropriate time, but inevitably Ms. Kent WILL wake up. We’re going to have to come up with a system to manage your condition until we discover a way to separate the two of you more permanently.

This is a mess! I certainly don’t remember seeing any of this in the Vault. I’m already starting to forget things…

Chryseis… we need to talk about that. You were willing to protect the contents of the Vault with every fiber of your being. A part of you was even willing to kill me to protect its secrets. What’s in there?

If you want a look at what’s inside The Vault, we need to be quick. Now that it’s been opened, everything inside is disintegrating.

It’s already open?

You can thank Ms. Kent for that. It was the raw fury of my “primal” nature that was keeping The Vault locked down. In my current “configuration” I’m not able to contain it any more.

What could be so important? What’s in there Chryseis?

Memories… of things that haven’t happened yet…and now they’re all fading away.

You’re talking about the future… The Vault contains everything that your Goddess persona witnessed about the future!

I was trying to keep that knowledge locked away from her. I couldn’t control myself during the power quest… The Goddess persona was too strong… but I could deny her access to one of her greatest powers. By blocking her memories of the future, I was hoping you guys might have an opportunity to surprise her and take her down.

Nice move… I guess it worked… well, sort of…

Manipulating the future is what the power quest was all about. When it first started, I was enjoying the rush from all of the new powers that I was collecting. It was addictive… more than I or any other mortal could handle. I didn’t realize this while it was happening, but basically every time I took out a bad guy a piece of their soul would break off and stay inside my head. It became harder and harder for me to figure out which decisions were mine and which were influenced by all of those other souls.

Yes. Many of us suspected as much. We don’t blame you for what happened, Chryseis. We have learned that your Light Rings were sabotaged by the Lord of Lycans. Actually, some of us blame you any way…but we can discuss that later. Go on…

But don’t you see? ...I DESERVE THE BLAME! On some level, it was my choice! The Diabolist was the turning point. She’s an oracle. She could see the future. Looking back on it, I think she knew what was about to happen. I think she wanted it. Hmmmm… that makes me wonder what she must have gained from all of this? …At any rate... when I took her down with the Soul Arrow I copied her powers... I could see the future…. and what I saw was… it was…

Something terrible?

No… it was wonderful!!! It was a temptation that I couldn’t resist. Honestly, I don’t know if I gave in to it because of the other souls, or if I made the choice on my own…

What choice? What did you see?

It was a vision of everything that I ever wanted. I saw a complete roadmap filled with the wondrous and terrible things that would happen along the way… and at the end of that road I saw my heart’s desire fulfilled. I saw Pyrrah cured of her lycanthropic curse! And even further down the line I could see us happy and together again! I knew that if I took the first step down the path, there would be no going back… and all I had to do was stick a Soul Arrow through the head of one of my best friends.

Chryseis…

Don’t try to tell me this isn’t my fault, Spellbound! …I DID IT! …… I AM RESPONSIBLE!!! …I can justify my actions, but so can EVERY bad guy that I’ve ever taken down!!!

Chryseis, you’re not the bad guy. You’ve been manipulated and pulled inside out. And even if you were in your right mind… honestly… I might have made the same decision in your place. Until you face a situation like that… who knows what any of us are truly capable of?

Well… I hope you never have to find out.

I don’t believe that the future is that rigid. Just because you had a vision doesn’t mean that it will come to pass… and prophecy can easily be misinterpreted. Let’s look inside and see what’s left before all of it is gone.

Are you kidding me?!?! Didn’t you hear anything that I just said?

We don’t have much time. Your memories of the future are fading quickly and soon there won’t be anything left. They’re already too incomplete to serve as a reliable “roadmap”… but there might be some small clue that we can learn that might help us to save lives in the future! Pyrrah is still out there with all of that power… and we have no idea where to find the Lord of Lycans… Our enemies are too many steps ahead of us and they are too strong! We can’t afford to bury our heads in the sand when the answers might be right at our fingertips. We have to look now… before the visions are gone forever!

We could be doing more harm than good.

Knowledge is neither good nor evil, Chryseis... I’m going in.

Well… then… I’ve got your back.

Welcome to the Vault, Spellbound… or what’s left of it anyway…
Chryseis… This is… this is…

Overwhelming? Incomprehensible? Maddening? This is just a fraction of a fraction of the insanity that’s been rattling around inside in my head for months now. You don’t want to stay in here for very long. It’ll make you a little… cranky.
I… I can’t believe it… It’s amazing! Is all of this really going to happen?
I have no idea... Some of it might... We won’t know until we get to each point in time, I guess. There aren’t many visions left anymore, as compared to the millions that I saw at the start of my little rampage. The images are vanishing one by one and I’m forgetting everything about them as soon as they disappear. I suspect you’ll probably remember more of this stuff than I will. I’m not supposed to have this information… perhaps no one is.
This is just… so astonishing! I wish there was more! Do you know when these events will transpire?

I don’t know. I’m definitely not an oracle. Very little of this makes any sense to me. I don’t even know who some of these people are because I haven’t met them yet!

They must be important for you have to have held onto these final memories so tightly. I'm trying to commit as much as possible to my own memory. Even the tiniest detail could be important if we’re going to try to prevent some of these tragedies.
Just remember… everything that you see here can be extremely dangerous! You could make things much worse by trying to make them better.

Yes. Yes, of course…

Spellbound... Is it just me or… does the entire Vault seem to be getting smaller?
The walls are moving! The Vault is collapsing in on itself. I think we're... we're waking up! Our anesthetic must be wearing off! We need to get out of here immediately! I’m not sure what will happen if the Vault door closes while we’re inside.
No, wait! ... I just… Let me take one last look... I don't want to forget seeing her... us... like this...
Chryseis! There's no time!
You have to promise me, Spellbound! Promise to remind me!!! After everything that I've done... all of the lives that were lost or ruined by the Power Quest... I NEED to remember that I still have a chance to save Pyrrah!!! I have to remember that we still have a chance to be happy together! Promise me!!!!

Chryseis... I don't know what the future holds or when, but I am certain that your love for Pyrrah will endure. I promise to remind you... but I suspect you'll remember this particular image all on your own. Now... it's time to let this go.... Leave the Power Quest and all of your doubts and self-blame here in this Vault. It's time for a fresh start... Now, more than ever, the world needs the Amazon Arrow!

You... you're right... I'll... I'll do my best... and besides... the world also needs a really gorgeous librarian from time to time!

Ha! It probably does.
You're a pretty amazing woman, Spellbound. I just want you to know that if you ever turn into a power mad goddess and attack all of your friends... I'll be there for you.

Uhm... thanks?
Now let's get out of my brain and hit the streets! The world won't save itself!

THE END

WHEW!!!! ...and that’s the ride, friends! The Power Quest series is officially over! I hope you enjoy the IMAX finale image! As you can see, the Power Quest might be over, but I have more than a few plans for the future. Stay tuned! Same Amazon time! Same Amazon channel!
Peace,
Chryseis

Amazon Arrow's Power Quest | Part 7 - Amazon Arrow's Downfall

Her name is Chryseis and she is the former Amazon Arrow. I watch as she slowly levitates an entire National Guard tank unit into the air with the power of her mind. As the massive armored vehicles leave the ground, the soldiers within leap from the floating weapons and run for safety. Once they are clear, Chryseis crushes the war machines with a thought and drops them to the pavement. Mortal Men chose to stand in the path of a mad Goddess to protect innocent civilians. I applaud their desire to defend their people, but these Men are completely outmatched.

Chryseis is an Amazon; it is the responsibility of the Amazons to deal with what she has become.

She has become a living goddess. Her naked flesh glows with an inner light. Her eyes are the color of an infinite blackness. Her soulless laughter echoes throughout the city and sends a chill up my spine. My name is Aella and I am the current Amazon Arrow. I have been tasked by The First Ones to judge Chryseis, my predecessor, to determine if she can be restored to her former self and, if not… I am to kill her. To aid me in my mission I am armed with the Black Arrow, a single mystical bolt capable of slaying a Goddess.

This responsibility weighs heavily on my soul.

I am no killer. I may be an excellent archer, but I am not a warrior. I have never taken a life. Complicating my mission further, Chryseis is more than just another Amazon sister to me. We were intimate once. It was nearly a thousand years ago, but I still love her to this day. Unrequited love seems to be a curse shared by all of the Amazon Arrows… along with a tendency to fall from grace.

If I slay Chryseis… would that not make me evil as well?

Melousa's strategy begins to unfold. We have evacuated this region of the city and our goal is to keep Chryseis confined to this area. We must achieve air superiority and put her on the ground. As she disposes of the tanks and rises into the air, one of my Amazon sisters descends from the upper atmosphere at blinding speed. Tania has answered Melousa's rallying call, and as it turns out she has unfinished business with Chryseis. The two fought recently and Ultra Woman was taken by surprise, both by the sudden assault from a friend and by Chryseis's new-found abilities. This time Ultra Woman knows exactly what she is up against... and she will not hold back.

Ultra Woman looks like a red, blue and blonde blur as she prepares to strike. She has been blessed by the Gods with astonishing might and her velocity will add to her already considerable power.

As Ultra Woman breaks the sound barrier and draws back her fist, Chryseis turns to face her…

The impact from the blow sounds like an explosion as Ultra Woman hits Chryseis with everything she has. Chryseis’s head snaps backwards as the incredible punch sends the fledgling goddess spinning through the air. I hear the windows around me shatter and I dive for cover just as the shockwave approaches my position; the pressure disturbance still manages to rattle my teeth and temporarily robs me of my hearing.

I am astonished to see that Chryseis can still bleed.

I can’t help but wonder how Ultra Woman’s punch managed to connect. Chryseis could have phased through the blow, or perhaps dodged it with her enhanced speed. She is precognitive. She has access to force fields, teleportation and probably other options that we know nothing about. Could we have somehow taken her by surprise? Could she be overconfident? Could Chryseis’s true nature still be in there somewhere, struggling to help us defeat her from within?

Or could she simply be toying with us…

Tania's second blow sends Chryseis hurtling towards the ground like a comet. Chryseis makes no effort to alter her trajectory as she falls head-first towards the pavement. I can't tell if she is dazed, unconscious or dead... though that is unlikely given the accumulated invulnerability that Chryseis now possesses.

Chryseis falls limply from the sky and Ultra Woman races after her. I abandon my rooftop vantage point and scramble to the fire escape, heading for the streets below in an effort to keep Chryseis in range in case I need to use the Black Arrow to protect Ultra Woman… though Tania’s not the one that appears to need protection at the moment.

We anticipated far more resistance from the former Amazon Arrow; Ultra Woman’s blows should not have been this effective. I take her apparent vulnerability as a sign that some part of Chryseis must not want to fight against us.

Perhaps her true nature is still in there somewhere… or perhaps some other strategy is at play…

Chryseis slams face first into the pavement with enough force to create a large crater, sending debris and broken rock flying several stories back up into the air. Ultra Woman crashes down on her at high speed just moments later; the resulting shockwave sends automobiles flipping down the street end over end. Amazons at war create significant property damage. The streets in this area are all evacuated, but this battle is going to cost the treasury at the Amazon Embassy a king's ransom.

Melousa's plan calls for a relentless blitzkrieg assault to keep Chryseis off balance... and it seems to be paying off. The stunned goddess appears to be too disoriented to mount an effective counter attack. Melousa is already airborne, preparing to strike with the Hellborne powers of The Obolos Spear.

Ultra Woman leaps aside as Melousa plunges the Obolos Spear into Chryseis from behind. I cringe as I watch my friends literally stab her in the back... but the Obolos Spear is probably Chryseis's best chance for redemption.

The handle of this enchanted weapon was once an oar used by Charon, the boatman of the river Styx and Acheron, he who is tasked with ferrying the dead into Hades. While the spear is a non-lethal weapon that produces no wounds, Melousa can grant her foes a brief taste of death. Those with evil hearts who are struck with The Obolos Spear’s glowing blade receive a vision of the fate that awaits them in Hades; they collapse into a state of shock and awaken reformed, confessing their sins and committed to a more righteous path.

Or rather... that is what's supposed to happen...

I can see from the strange look in Melousa's eyes that something has gone horribly wrong. Melousa is the Amazon’s strongest and most feared warrior and the General of the Amazon Armies. She has survived an untold number of battles and encountered every imaginable foe... but this is the first time I have ever seen her scared. Her eyes glow with an unearthly light as rancid vapors swirl around her.

I do not know what she is seeing, but it's enough to make our leader scream...

“AELLA! FALL BACK!”

Lykopis practically tackles me as our leader crumples to the ground, felled by some mysterious counterattack. As Lykopis pushes her way in front of me she deflects my aim, ensuring that I cannot unleash the Black Arrow with the Gorgon’s Bow.

“We need a new plan! We CAN’T use the Black Arrow any longer! It’s not an option!”

At first I can’t understand why Lykopis is so panicked… until I realize what Lykopis has already surmised. Our Amazon General used the Obolos Spear on Chryseis moments before they both fell screaming amid a whirlwind of green hellfire. Chryseis was affected by the power of the weapon briefly, but thanks to her vast powers and regenerative abilities she is able to recover much faster than Melousa. Even know Chryseis is rising to her feet, while Melousa writhes on the ground frothing at the mouth as unknown hellish visions plunge her into a madness from which she cannot awaken.
Chryseis possesses the ability to reflect magic that is used against her to strike down her attackers… even the powerful enchantments from the weapons of the Gods...

…like the Obolos Spear

…and the Black Arrow.

If I attempt to slay Chryseis with the Black Arrow… it will end my life as well.

This was not the plan. Ultra Woman reverses her flight path and returns to the battle as Melousa collapses to the pavement, struck down by the power of her own weapon. The Amazon General twitches and groans as visions from the Underworld assail her shattering mind.

Chryseis materializes her Soul Bow and Arrow and takes aim at the incoming Tania. The Soul Bow is a formidable weapon in any mortal's hands... but fueled by the limitless power of a living Goddess, I fear that Ultra Woman has no chance.

She is our most powerful warrior. If Tania falls we will have no way of containing Chryseis.

Firing a Soul Arrow takes strength from the archer, which usually limits the number of arrows that Chryseis can fire at one time. In her current state there appears to be no end to her strength.

Her movements are a superspeed-enhanced blur as she fires again and again, creating a screen of Soul Arrows that rain down on Ultra Woman. Tania’s speed is also formidable and she manages to deflect several with her bracers and to dodge many others, but within seconds Ultra Woman is overwhelmed by projectiles.

The battle is over once the first Soul Arrow hits, but that doesn’t stop Chryseis from piercing Tania over and over again as the defeated heroine falls. The attack is non-lethal, but it is painful and unnecessarily cruel. Chryseis's maniacal laughter sends chills down my spine... and for the first time I wonder if the woman that I love is truly lost forever.

Lykopis orders me to take cover. She leaps into action to take advantage of Chryseis’s momentary distraction…

My betrothed and my beloved are trying to kill each other. I can barely breath…

Lykopis is armed with the Soul Sword as well as a Crescent Blade capable of slicing through any known substance. The Amazon Blade has sworn not to kill her enemies, but her Crescent Blade could disembowel or decapitate a foe should she ever change her mind. The blade’s sharpness comes from the quality of its divine forging rather than sorcery, so it should still prove to be effective against Chryseis. Lykopis uses the whirling Soul Sword as a distraction while trying to create an opening for a lethal strike with the Crescent Blade.

Lykopis is a vicious warrior and she is astonishingly fast and agile; many suspect that her ancestors were demigods, though no such recorded proof exists. With an edged weapon in her grasp her spinning and twirling movements become a dance of death.

I suspect that there is a part of Lykopis that has long craved this battle. Chryseis has always held a special place in my heart and it is impossible to keep such things a secret for the many thousands of years that we have all lived together on the Amazon Isles. Lykopis would never be so petty as to use her unmatched swordsmanship skills to dispatch a romantic rival, but Chryseis’s mad quest for power has given Lykopis all the justification she believes she needs to offer no quarter.

Lykopis’s intent is clear from her unleashed ferocity. She spins and whirls at hypersonic speed and every strike is potentially lethal. I have never seen her unrestrained like this and it is frightening to behold. Even more frightening is the apparent ease with which Chryseis is able to deflect Lykopis’s skillful blows. The battle is so fast that I am afraid to blink, knowing that any one blow could end Chryseis’s life at any moment.

My betrothed is an artisan of Death… but I am no longer certain that Death holds dominion over Chryseis.

There is no explosion…

No light show…

No violent sound…

No cathartic release of energy or fury...

There is only a shocking silence as Lykopis’s Crescent Blade beheads the Amazon Arrow.
After landing countless surgically-precise blows in a matter of seconds, Lykopis at last finds her opening and does not fail to exploit it.

To save me from my terrible burden, and to save the entire world from a rampaging Goddess… Lykopis has finished it.

Chryseis is dead.

I feel faint… My knees grow weak and my vision begins to fade.

It’s over… the Power Quest is over…

 Madness...

I have no other words.

The slurping sound of Chryseis’s head reattaching to her neck is sickening.

I do not know what kind of monstrosity she has become, but her power is beyond anything that I have ever experienced. The scale of destruction that this creature could unleash is unimaginable. Perhaps Chryseis’s true nature and respect for life is at work here? In the wrong hands this power could be apocalyptic.

Lykopis lies unconscious and is clearly injured. Melousa has mercifully stopped twitching and screaming, but she remains unresponsive and unaware of her surroundings. Ultra Woman has been struck down by Soul Arrows. All of this has transpired in a matter of seconds. Echephyle now rushes to the scene of the battle, but I do not know how the Amazon Shield can succeed where the others have failed.

My turn is coming… The First Ones gave me the Black Arrow for a reason, but I simply don’t see the necessity for its use. Chryseis is not a killer... not yet. And I am no assassin. Perhaps I am not seeing the situation clearly because my own life is now at risk? It’s true, I am scared… and I do not want to die.

Chryseis must be stopped, but what can I do? If I don’t use the Black Arrow, what other option remains?

The Amazon Shield is extremely powerful, but she is neither fast nor stealthy. Chryseis whirls as Echephyle approaches and unleashes an energy blast that scorches the air and steals my breath away. I am forced to retreat from the immediate vicinity of the conflict as the thermal and concussive energies rise to lethal and unfathomable levels.

Echephyle is staggered, but she does not fall.

The Amazon Shield carries no weapons, but her armor is believed to be impenetrable. Chryseis appears eager to put that to the test as she blasts away with spells, lightning, fire, radiation and other astonishing powers that I cannot identify.

If Echephyle feels any of this, she utters no complaints… as is her way. She never speaks.
The Amazon Shield was chosen from amongst those who practice the healing arts.  The Shield Tournament finals were conducted in secret and judged by The First One’s themselves. Four Amazon healers entered the final arena. Three of them emerged shaken to their very core, traumatized by what they had witnessed and sworn to speak nothing of what had transpired. The fourth Amazon… the victor… was Echephyle, our most respected battlefield surgeon and our most compassionate soul.

Many believe that Echephyle died to become the Amazon Shield.

Some believe that she is now horribly disfigured, or one of the undead, or a demon, or perhaps a ghost doomed to haunt an armored shell. They say she made the ultimate sacrifice to win the tournament so that others might live. Echephyle no longer sleeps or eats or speaks. The Amazon Shield is a terrifying entity…silent, relentless and indestructible. The Amazon Shield’s gauntlets are capable of healing virtually any wound and she possesses supernatural strength.

Could Chryseis’s salvation lie in Echephyle’s healing touch?

The asphalt boils and burns as Chryseis ignites an inferno of plasma that engulfs The Amazon Shield. I do not know what Echephyle feels within her armored suit… I don’t even know if she is capable of feeling… but she does not relent. Echephyle staggers forward and reaches out with her healing gauntlets. She will be within reach of Chryseis in a matter of moments if she continues to survive the onslaught.

I wonder if the gauntlets are capable of healing Chryseis’s obviously fractured mind?

Can they repair the bizarre transformation that has altered Chryseis’s body?

The living goddess knows know fear. She could fly away… or perhaps teleport Echephyle to the other side of the city. She has so many powers and options… why does she stand her ground at all? Perhaps she welcomes the challenge? Perhaps she knows that the gauntlets will somehow backfire on Echephyle? Could the healing gloves be made to inflict damage back upon The Amazon Shield?

I try to shout a warning to Echephyle, but I doubt that she can hear me as she closes the final distance between her and Chryseis. Over the cacophony of destruction I hear Chryseis’s laughter. She taunts Echephyle and threatens to melt her down to slag.

To my astonishment, I hear Echephyle respond…

“I’M NOT ECHEPHYLE! HAHAHAHA!”

Chryseis’s expression of shock mirrors my own as she is suddenly pierced by a Soul Arrow from the Night Ring. At that moment “Echephyle” removes her helmet to reveal the wickedly beautiful face of one of the Amazon’s greatest former champions…

The First Amazon Arrow…

Concubine of the Lord of Lycans…

Sworn Enemy of the First Ones…

Chryseis’s Lost Love and Nemesis…

PYRRAH!

My mind races to make sense of what I am seeing… The “Amazon Shield” has fought at our side for months in silence... Sealed within her armored shell Pyrrah must have been patiently waiting for this moment for months… None of us suspected… I cannot imagine what terrible fate must have befallen the real Echephyle… Pyrrah has been one step ahead of us… She has made fools of us all… The villainess has been waiting to spring this surprise attack on Chryseis...

...but… why go through so much trouble?

Pyrrah needed to get close…

She needed to strike Chryseis at point blank range…

With the Soul Arrow…

And I finally realize…

This is no longer Chryseis’s Quest for Power!

I am Aella... the third Amazon Arrow... I know what I must do.

I pull the Black Arrow from my quiver and prepare to die.

It’s over in an instant… Chryseis collapses as all of her newly acquired powers rush from her body and flow into Pyrrah through the Soul Arrow.

Chryseis’s Light Rings and Pyrrah’s Night Rings are part of a set; their magics are intertwined. I can only assume that when the Lord of Lycans unleashed the power of the Light Rings, it must have amplified the Night Rings as well.

Pyrrah was always the most dangerous woman on the planet… now she is also the most powerful.
She is homicidal, paranoid, lycanthropic and insane. She has vowed to destroy all of the First Ones. She is dishonorable and a disgrace to the Amazons. I would sacrifice my life to kill Pyrrah even if she did not have the power of a living goddess… now that she does, I will not hesitate to do what must be done.

I draw back the Gorgon’s Bow and take aim with the Black Arrow…

The Black Arrow ignites and streams divine fire in its wake as it leaves the Gorgon’s Bow. My aim is true. The Black Arrow is a godslayer; there is no armor it cannot penetrate, and no foe it cannot kill.

Pyrrah is power drunk and disoriented by the sudden rush from her newly acquired abilities. She has had no time to master their use. I see the desperation and panic in her eyes as the Black Arrow races towards her. She reflexively fires blasts of energy at the incoming projectile and erects a mystical force field to deflect it, but the Black Arrow slices cleanly through all of it without resistance.

She is beaten and she knows it. I can see it in her eyes. Pyrrah’s reign as a living goddess will be mercifully brief… almost as brief as my tenure as the Amazon Arrow. My only hope is that Pyrrah has not yet enabled the enchantment that will reflect the Black Arrow’s lethal magic upon me… but if I am to lose my life also, then so be it.

I savor my last breath… content that I will die saving the world and Chryseis from one of the Amazon’s greatest foes…

I am prepared to sacrifice my life to destroy Pyrrah and end this threat once and for all... but Lykopis will not allow it.

I watch helplessly as my betrothed uses her superspeed to intercept the Black Arrow, sacrificing herself to ensure that I will live. Everything happens so quickly... there is nothing that I can do to stop her. I have no time to scream... or to cry... or to say goodbye. The very instant that the Black Arrow strikes Lykopis's breast she dematerializes and vanishes into dust. There is nothing left of her or the Black Arrow.

She is simply gone.

“FOOLS!!! LOOK AT WHAT YOU’VE DONE!!!”

The Gorgon’s Bow slips from my grasp as Pyrrah yanks me towards her by my throat using some sort of telekinetic ability. I gasp and struggle to take a breath as I dangle helplessly in the air, suspended by an invisible force.

“Who are YOU to judge ME?!?!? You tried to kill me… and now an Amazon has fallen! I am NOT your enemy! How many times must I say it?!?!”

Tears stream from my eyes. Lykopis’s death rips me apart inside even as Pyrrah chokes the life from me.

“Don’t you see?!?! You are all nothing more than the First One’s puppets! Your beloved oracles orchestrated all of this! Do not blame yourself for Lykopis’s death… it is the First Ones that set these events in motion! This is EXACTLY what they wanted!”

Pyrrah is angry beyond reason and consumed with madness and power. Her irrational hatred for the First Ones remains unchanged by her transformation. I cannot believe that the First Ones arranged for Lykopis’s death… nor do I believe that they would want Pyrrah, of all people, to wield the might of a living goddess.

“You… Chryseis… all of you… stay out of my way! Only I can do what must be done! I must lead the rebellion!”

My vision tunnels as I begin to black out. My arms fall to my sides. My legs swing uselessly. She is killing me… and I can do nothing to stop it.

“Lykopis deserves her fate… and so do you! This is just the first battle in a Celestial War! There will be a Heroine Holocaust! The Owl will burn! Only I have the power to…”

I think her rant continues, but the ringing in my ears drowns her out…

The ringing fades into silence…

I see darkness…

I feel coldness…

and then… nothing.

We did not call for reinforcements, but apparently Detective Reed anticipated the possibility of our downfall and summoned other heroes from nearby Queen City. They arrived too late to confront Pyrrah, which is probably for the best.  Pyrrah could have killed us all, but instead she allowed us to live; she might not have shown such mercy to those who are not Amazons.

Pyrrah’s ravings still haunt me. Our confidence in battle stems in part from our certain knowledge that the First One’s visions of the future will guide us to success… and that our cause is righteous.

While the path to victory was never clear, I also did not believe that we would suffer such a devastating and unexpected defeat. Pyrrah’s presence in this engagement was not a factor that we were either aware of or prepared to overcome. Could the Oracles have failed to see what would transpire? Or was Pyrrah correct? Is this what they wanted to happen? Are we merely pawns in some sort of larger strategy? Would they knowingly allow a psychopath like Pyrrah to acquire such unlimited power? Would they really sacrifice Lykopis’s life to achieve their goals?

And if so… then what ARE their goals?

The First Ones have ruled the Amazons benevolently for untold millennia, so it is not my place to question their wisdom… and yet… I cannot shake the feeling that something is amiss. I owe it to Lykopis to investigate further.

Pyrrah took our weapons: Melousa’s Obolos Spear, Echephyle’s Armor, Lykopis’s Crescent Blade and Soul Sword, my Gorgon’s Bow… she even took Chryseis’s Light Rings that manifest her Soul Bow and Arrows. There are twelve Amazon Champions in Man’s World. Pyrrah has disarmed the Amazon Shield, the Amazon Lance, the Amazon Blade and the Amazon Arrow… I suspect that the other eight Champions will be her next targets. I intend to find them and warn them that they are being hunted by a mad goddess.

Melousa has stepped down as the Amazon General. She does not speak of the visions that were inflicted upon her.

Echephyle remains missing. We do not know if she is dead or being held captive by Pyrrah. The First Ones claim to be looking for her.

A funeral was held for Lykopis on the Amazon Isles, though there was no body to bury. I will never forget her love or her sacrifice.

As for Chryseis’s fate… well… that is her story to tell.
